Apple Expands Independent Repair Shop Program to Europe, Canada 3

Apple Expands Independent Repair Shop Program to Europe, Canada

Apple said on Wednesday that it is expanding a program to supply repair parts, tools, and manuals for iPhones to independent repair shops in 32 countries in Europe as well as Canada.
Apple began the program last year in the United States after years of lobbying against state-level “right to repair” bills that would have compelled it to provide parts to independent shops.
Apple has long maintained a network of authorised service providers such as Best Buy to perform warranty work, but smaller shops had complained that the program was too costly to join because of high volume commitments, leaving them without access to genuine Apple parts or the software tools needed to perform some repairs.
Apple launched its program for those independent shops last August, making it free to join if technicians complete a training program. Apple said Wednesday that 140 businesses with 700 locations have signed up for the program in the United States. Some of the independent shops, such as uBreakiFix, have multiple locations, while some are sole proprietorships.
“When a customer needs a repair, we want them to have a range of options that not only suits their needs but also guarantees safety and quality so their iPhone can be used for as long as possible,” Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.
Under the program, independent shops get access to Apple parts and tools to perform out-of-warranty repairs. They also get Apple parts at the same prices as authorised servRead More…

Samsung Electronics Flags Second-Quarter Profit Jump on Solid Chip Demand, One-Off Gains From Apple 4

Samsung Electronics Flags Second-Quarter Profit Jump on Solid Chip Demand, One-Off Gains From Apple

Samsung Electronics flagged a 23 percent rise in second-quarter operating profit on Tuesday, beating analysts’ estimates on solid chip sales to data centres catering for a work-from-home economy during the coronavirus pandemic.
The sales offset weak demand for smartphones and TVs, while one-off gains from its display business, which counts Apple as a customer, also boosted profits, the company said. It gave no further details.
The world’s top memory chip and smartphone maker said operating profit was likely KRW 8.1 trillion (roughly Rs. 50,708 crores) in the quarter ended June, far above the KRW 6.4 trillion (roughly Rs. 40,058 crores) analyst forecast by Refinitiv SmartEstimate. It would be the highest quarterly profit since the fourth quarter of 2018.
Revenue likely fell 7 percent to KRW 52 trillion (roughly Rs. 3.25 lakh crores) from a year earlier, Samsung added, giving only limited data in a regulatory filing ahead of its full earnings figures later this month.
Work-from-home orders and growth in online learning are underpinning chip demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic and pushing up DRAM memory chip prices. US DRAM supplier Micron Technology forecast strong quarterly revenue last month.
“Chip demand was stronger than expected due to the COVID-19,” said Park Sung-soon, an analyst at Cape Investment & Securities.
Analysts said the one-off display boost reflected a payment from Apple, with the US smartphone maker struggling to meet agreed shipment targets as iPhone saleRead More…

Samsung Takes to WhatsApp to Offer Contactless Customer Service: Here’s How to Register

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, Samsung has started offering customer support services through WhatsApp. Not only does this ensure a contactless service, it also promotes a quick solution to consumers’ problems at the safety of their homes. It also helps customers in finding out locations of service centres nearby, new offers and know the status of repair. Apart from the messenger, the South Korean giant has several other options for consumers to reach out to, including remote support, live chat, and do-it-yourself videos.
Getting in touch with Samsung on WhatsApp is pretty easy. All you need to do is send a message to its support number 1800-5-SAMSUNG (1800-5-7267864) to register. Once done, the service can be used to seek any sort of technical support. Customers can also request for demo and installation of the brand’s products. The WhatsApp service is available on all days of the week, from 9am to 6pm.
Apart from WhatsApp, Samsung smartphone and Smart TV users can also opt for remote support, where a professional can gain access to a device through the Internet, diagnose the issue and provide a solution. According to the brand’s official statement, over 70,000 queries are resolved remotely every month. Consumers can also conduct a live chat with trained agents through the support section on its website any time of the day. Samsung says that on an average, over 9,000 queries have been resolved through this on a daily basis. Samsung also posts do-itRead More…

Samsung's Q2 Chip Sales Unlikely Made Up for Smartphone Weakness: Analysts 6

Samsung’s Q2 Chip Sales Unlikely Made Up for Smartphone Weakness: Analysts

At Samsung Electronics, demand for its chips from data centres bulking up to meet a surge in work-from-home traffic was not likely enough to offset muted sales of its smartphones in the second quarter, analysts said.
The world’s biggest supplier of DRAM and NAND memory chips on Tuesday will announce preliminary April-June revenue as well as operating profit, which it previously expected to show a decline.
Profit likely fell 4.5 percent to KRW 6.3 trillion (rughly Rs. 39,405 crores) from the same period year earlier, according to Refinitiv SmartEstimate, which is weighted towards the more consistently accurate analysts.
Work-from-home orders and growth in online learning is underpinning chip demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting US DRAM supplier Micron Technology to forecast strong quarterly revenue last month.
Chips bring in roughly half of Samsung’s profit. The rest is mainly smartphones, of which the South Korean firm is the world’s largest maker.
“With improved demand, a spike in DRAM prices helped Samsung continue with a solid performance in the second quarter,” said analyst Park Sung-soon at Cape Investment & Securities.
Those price increases were likely driven by data centres stockpiling chips and so are unlikely to continue, analysts said. Though DRAM prices jumped 14 percent in the quarter, they were flat in June versus May, showed data from DRAMeXchange.
“Until uncertainty stemming from the pandemic goes away, the sector’s outlook isn’t too positive,” saiRead More…

Apple Supplier Foxconn Says Indian Customs Clearing Procedures Have Been Resolved

Apple supplier Foxconn said on Friday customs clearing procedures in India have been resolved, as additional scrutiny by the country of imports from China disrupted operations in some foreign firms amid tensions between the Asian giants.
Foxconn’s customs clearance for cargo logistics in India has been resolved and all local regulatory procedures have been complied with, Foxconn said in a filing to Taipei stock exchange. It did not elaborate. Customs officers at Indian ports have held back shipments from China and sought additional clearances after deadly clashes at the disputed Himalayan border last month. The increased scrutiny of imports from China has disrupted operations at Foxconn, three sources told Reuters earlier this week.

Apple Supplier Foxconn, Others Hit as India Said to Hold Back Imports From China

India’s additional scrutiny of imports from China has disrupted operations at plants owned by Apple supplier Foxconn in southern India, three sources told Reuters, and other foreign firms are also facing delays as tensions between the two countries build.
Customs officers at Indian ports have held back shipments from China and sought additional clearances after deadly clashes at the Himalayan border last month. The checks have been imposed without any formal order.
While several companies such as Apple and Dell have been battling to free stuck shipments, hundreds of employees at Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn’s two plants in the south had no major work to do this week as shipments were delayed, sources said.
More than 150 Foxconn shipments – containing smartphone and electronic parts – were stuck at the port of Chennai, though some are being cleared slowly now, the first source said. The total number of parts in the shipments was not clear.
Foxconn’s two plants in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh mainly assemble Apple and Xiaomi smartphones in the country and employ thousands of workers, many of whom stay in company-provided accommodation.
“Foxconn was in a very bad state … lots of workers stayed at the dormitory because there was no work,” said the first source.
Foxconn, Apple, and Xiaomi did not respond to Reuters queries.
The finance ministry also did not respond. Two officials at the ministry, which oversees the customs department, said the inspection measures weRead More…

Apple Supplier Foxconn Eyes Further India Investment 9

Apple Supplier Foxconn Eyes Further India Investment

Taiwan’s Foxconn is planning further investment in India and may announce details in the next few months as the world’s largest contract manufacturer views the outlook there very favourably, its chairman said on Tuesday. Foxconn already makes smartphones in India for Apple and Xiaomi, though in March said it suspended production due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Chairman Liu Young-way told Foxconn’s annual general meeting that looking ahead, India was a bright spot for development even though there was a “certain impact” at present due to the virus.
“We are fully pushing ahead with next steps there, and maybe in a few months’ time we can reveal on our website the next steps and report back to everyone. We’ll have further investment there,” Liu said, without detailing plans or reasons for the firm’s view on the business outlook in India.
Foxconn’s January-March profit plunged to its lowest in two decades after the outbreak forced the firm to suspend manufacturing in China and knocked demand from customers including Apple.
But the firm, formally Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, last month said the worst of the outbreak for it was over.
Liu described the first-quarter results as a “special case” that reflected the effect of the virus. He said there were no infections at its China plants so it was able to resume operations earlier than it expected.
Foxconn is seeking to make up virus-related losses at its China plants with “resources” from customers and local governments. LiuRead More…
